Driving Lessons Gloucester- Customer Review.

"On my last driving lesson, we practised roundabouts and I feel that I made really good progress. My driving instructor, Tom Lowe, gave me a thorough briefing on roundabout procedure and started me off in a quieter area with some roundabouts and by the end of the driving lesson, we had progressed to a busier roundabout area and I was confident. There is more to do on the subject, but it's come down to size now. I'm glad I chose John Lowe Driving for my driving lessons."

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Box Junctions.

Box Junctions.
Box Junctions cause a lot of confusion, and not just to learner drivers. In my daily travels I see them misunderstood and misused pretty regularly. They would not cause so many problems if they were used correctly.
Do not enter a box junction, unless you can exit it without stopping, unless you are turning right, and the only things stopping your progress are approaching vehicles and others turning right. The crossroads at Cheltenham college is particularly frustrating, as drivers when turning right do not go into the box junction and wait. (It's pretty large.) Here's what the Highway Code says:
Rule 174

Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road.

You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.

At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Customer Review.

"I've got some good techniques for doing the manoeuvres from my driving instructor, Nick Butters of John Lowe Driving.  Also they are much easier to do and observe properly when I don't rush them!"

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Customer Review.

"Today, on my driving lesson, I started a manouevre that I had a lot of worries about. At the beginning of the lesson, my driving instructor, John Lowe, and me discussed how we should approach the session, and we decided to look at reversing into a parking bay, something that I thought would be really difficult. John explained that it can be very difficult if you use just guesswork, but if you have a system, it's not so hard. John explained his system very simply and talked me through the first attempt, and I reversed into the bay. I then had another try, with him just giving me prompts, and I succeeded again. Next, I tried it independently, and that was the most successful of them all! I'm so pleased to be able to do bay parking, and really pleased that I chose John Lowe Driving."

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Hazard Perception- Adding to a previous post.

What to look for and when to click. Some tips.

  • Look into the far distance, you may see a clue, a pedestrian for example, who may cause you problems a little later. Click when you see him, and again if it develops.
  • Junctions and crossroads. Watch for cars from either side.
  • Parked vans. Look along its side and underneath it. You may see their feet before they step out.
  • Traffic lights. People crossing and cars turning.
  • Pedestrian crossings. People crossing normally, or running towards it.
  • Straight roads. Bonnets up and doors open.
  • Straight roads. Pedestrians, click early.
  • Ladders on buildings near the road. Probable workmen.
  • Roadworks signs. Lorries and workmen.
  • School signs. Lollipop ladies and children.
  • Country lanes. Bends etc., horses, pedestrians in road, lorries and cars.
  • Motorways. Traffic joining after a bridge. Look for warning signs.
  • Motorways & Dual carriageways. Lane changing, causing hazard.

  • Roundabouts. Sudden lane changes.

Driving Lessons Gloucester- DVSA Theory Test.

The DVSA have introduced a new resource to help people prepare for their Theory Test. I have not tried it myself yet, as it did not function properly when I tried to log in. It was day 1, so it was probably overused! It is also not free like many other theory test resources that can be found online, but here are the details anyway. If you do use this, you will, of course, be fully up to date.

The ‘DVSA Learning Zone’ is a learning material that provides instant access to all the latest DVSA car theory test revision questions and answers.
If you’re studying for your car theory test, you can use this service to revise and take practice tests on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC.
You can also choose the amount of time you need to study.

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Hazard Perception Test- Quick Tips.

    Hazard Perception Test. Quick Tips.

It can be a tricky business understanding the Hazard Protection Test. Apart from developing the skills required, you will need to know how to avoid the  common pitfall of "over-clicking," which will lead to a zero score and is a major cause of failure. Over-clicking is usually a sign of a lack of undestanding in what is required in the test.

When each video begins, have it in mind to "plan your journey," as you would on a real road. For example, should you be on a country lane, think about what you may encounter, in the short pause before the video begins.

Expect sheep or horses for example, possibly farm machinery, narrow road areas or fast moving vehicles. Look for brows of hills and the "vanishing point" of the road.(Ask your driving instructor!) The point is to glean a better understanding of your environment before setting off so you have a clearer idea of the kind of hazards you’ll be coming across.

When to click. As soon as you see a hazard, click. If the hazard develops, click again. This is the point of the test- to identify developing hazards. The speed at which your second click is recorded will determine your score on that video. Rapid clicking will be picked up by the cheat detection system and will score zero.

There is one hazard on each video to deal with, but there will be one video in the test with two hazards.

Look for clues, as you must in real driving, school signs, bonnets up, ladders near the road, tops of lorries above trees, vans with doors open, that can create hazards.

The more you practise, the easier it gets, so make sure you are ready and you should have no problems. Your driving instructor at John Lowe Driving, will of course offer any help needed.
